With years of experience in aesthetic surgery, Dr. Astri guided attendees through everything they need to know about face and neck lift procedures from selecting the right technique to what to expect during recovery.

Understanding the Aging Process

Dr. Astri began by breaking down how facial aging really works. From our 30s onward, we gradually lose collagen, skin elasticity, fat volume, and even bone density. This leads to sagging skin, deeper folds, and less facial definition over time.

But as she emphasised, the goal of aesthetic surgery isn’t to change your face, it’s to help you look like a refreshed, younger version of yourself.

Facelifts, she explained, aren’t just about tightening the skin. Aging impacts everything from the surface of the skin to the fat, muscle, and even the bone beneath. The most noticeable signs, like a softening jawline, jowls, or hollow cheeks are rooted in deeper structural changes.

That’s why the most advanced techniques, like the deep plane facelift, don’t just lift skin. They work below it, targeting the SMAS layer (a connective tissue between the skin and muscle) and releasing certain ligaments. This allows the surgeon to reposition facial tissue back to where it once was restoring, not reinventing, your natural contours.

Facelifts Aren’t About Changing Your Face

As Dr. Astri shared during the webinar: “It’s not changing your face. We just make your skin, your face go back to your young time.” This is the core philosophy behind modern facelift techniques. They don’t aim to make you look like someone else, they work beneath the surface, restoring the natural structure of your face so you still look like you, just fresher.

It’s a Process And That’s OK

The idea of waking up with a flawless face the next day? Not quite. Swelling, bruising, and even numbness are all part of the normal healing process.

Dr. Astri was refreshingly honest: “In the first few days, don’t look in the mirror too much it

might shock you. It’s not permanent. Healing takes time.”

It can take up to a year to see the final result. But most patients feel presentable again within 2–3 weeks.

We also learnt that facelifts can be safely combined with procedures like brow lifts, eyelid surgery, fat transfers, or lip lifts, depending on your needs. However, resurfacing lasers like CO2 are best done after healing (1–2 months later), to avoid overlapping trauma.

There Are Risks, But They Can Be Managed

No surgery is without risks. Bleeding, numbness, facial asymmetry (especially with deep plane techniques), or minor wound issues are possibilities.
