Understanding HBOT Pressures: How the Right Level of Oxygen Supports Healing

Nov 24, 2025

3 min read

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is becoming increasingly popular among post-surgical patients seeking faster, safer recovery. But one common question we hear is: “What do the pressures mean?”

Let’s take a closer look at how HBOT works — and why the pressure level makes such a difference.

What HBOT Actually Does

Inside a hyperbaric chamber, you breathe 100% pure oxygen while the air pressure is increased above normal atmospheric levels. This allows your blood plasma to carry significantly more oxygen — reaching areas that may be temporarily deprived after surgery or trauma.

The result? Enhanced tissue repair, reduced swelling, and improved wound healing.

Understanding Pressure Levels (ATA)

HBOT pressures are measured in ATA (atmospheres absolute) — a unit that reflects how much pressure is being applied inside the chamber compared to normal air.

  • 1.4 ATA – Mild HBOT Provides a gentle increase in oxygen absorption.

Commonly used for wellness, energy support, and light recovery.

Lower pressure = generally very comfortable and well-tolerated.

  • 1.6 ATA – Moderate HBOT

Delivers more oxygen than 1.4 ATA, which may further support circulation and tissue repair.

Sometimes used in research and early recovery protocols.

Still a comfortable treatment, with slightly stronger effects.

  • 2.0 ATA – Clinical Standard HBOT

A widely used pressure in medical HBOT centres around the world.

Provides a significant boost of oxygen, often used for more complex or medical-grade recovery needs.

Backed by strong clinical research for conditions such as wound healing, radiation injury, and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Requires careful monitoring but is safe under medical supervision.

Why Pressure Matters for Recovery

While mild HBOT can be relaxing and beneficial for general wellness, post-surgical healing requires deeper oxygen saturation — something only achievable at higher, medical-grade pressures.

These pressures help:

✅ Boost collagen formation and cell repair

✅ Minimise bruising and swelling

✅ Reduce infection risk by improving oxygen flow to tissues

✅ Accelerate recovery from anaesthesia and inflammation

Which One Do You Start With?

First Time Users :

For your first session or two, we often begin at 1.4-1.6 ATA. It’s comfortable, lowish pressure, and gives your body time to adapt. Many clients feel little to no discomfort.

If Wound Healing Needs an Extra Boost :

After assessing how your body responds and the progress of your healing, we may recommend moving up to 2.0 ATA sessions. That higher pressure delivers more oxygen to deeper tissues, supporting more intensive repair work.

Safety, Oversight & Comfort

All sessions are conducted with Rejuvo’s certified chambers, used by wellness and medical-wellness practices around the world.

Each client undergoes screening and monitoring before and during treatment.

You’ll always have the option to pause or step down pressure if needed — your comfort and safety are priorities

Putting It Together: Example Protocol

(Every client is individual; your protocol may differ depending on surgery type, medical advice, or your body’s response.)

What to Expect During a Session

Comfortable & Calm: You’ll be lying down inside the chamber.

Duration: Each session takes around 60 minutes to 90 minutes.

Sensation: The chamber gently pressurises, you may feel a light “ear-popping” sensation, similar to flying.

Relax: Many clients read, listen to music, or simply rest during treatment.

Understanding HBOT pressures helps patients appreciate why not all chambers are the same. The right level of oxygen — delivered safely and professionally — can significantly enhance recovery outcomes and comfort after surgery.
